CHAPTER 14: WATSON

On the roof of the Observatory, I could feel the cold wind cutting through my coat. Forty feet below us at the gateway, the uniformed constable stamped his feet and swung his arms, hugging himself; he also obviously felt the chill. Holmes gave no signs of discomfort. He and I crept carefully sideways, close to the rooftop edge. We had a grand view, a wide panorama extending from the green lawn of the park down to the river and to the buildings of London beyond, and then to the blue sky, dotted with a few white clouds. But it did not do to dwell upon the scenery. The wind came in gusts, and I knew one of those, if we were caught off balance, could send us to a swift fall down to the hard pavement.

We both leaned into the outer wall of the dome, resisting the efforts of the wind to dislodge us as we made our way around its circumference. Our goal was a point directly across from the window of Harewell’s office.

Finally, Holmes stopped. “There,” he said. “Harewell was standing at that window.”

I saw the tall window across from me. “When he saw the flash of green light?” I asked.

Holmes did not reply, for he crouched down, inching sideways and twisting his body so that he could make a close observation without endangering himself to a fatal fall.

Then I saw a coach and four pulling up to the entrance gate. The coach was turned sideways from me, and I could see a worn red painted crest with a faded white letter ‘P’ emblazoned on the door.

Holmes was examining the masonry around the edge of the roof, using his pocket knife to scrape something off the surface.

“A coach is coming, Holmes,” I said.

“I see it.” He quickly transferred the knife to a small envelope and tucked it into his coat. “We must go, Watson. Quickly and carefully.”
